How might we define and create key competences in user experiences for such a niche product?

🌟 There is an Opportunity

1.There’s a huge demand for micro-mobility and small electric vehicles at Chinese scenic parks. They are usually long distance trips for recreational purpose. Kids and family are the most common group.

😒 With Poor solutions

2. Poor accessibility for the demand. There are long waiting queues; Rental & Return are both only available at the entrance of the park.

3. High maintenance effort and lack of management; The rental vehicles occupies huge space at the entrance of the park.

 

πŸ“ User experience definition

In order to tackle the problem, we identified key factors of user experiences as guidelines before diving deep into UIs.

1. Self-serviced rent and return

The vehicle should be rented and returned on-demand by self-service. This is a relief to availability and inefficiency issues such as long waiting queues.

2. Ecosystem behind the stage

The maintenance effort of the vehicle is supported by telematics i.e. Knowing proactively if there’s a malfunctioning vehicle by location. This would help streamline the maintenance effort.

3. Personal travel guide

The purpose of an autonomous vehicle is to free the passenger from way-finding, thus let them enjoy the sightseeing and time spent with family and kids. The rover should actively recommends passengers point of interests and routes, as well as gives them information about the park as they ride in it.

4. Humanized technology

Autonomous driving could be terrifying to the general public due to lack of understanding. The interface should forms a dialog and creates trust between the vehicle and the passenger.

Golden Ridge Robotics is now operating the service in Panda Park, Chengdu. More parks will join this revolutionary journey. The product offers a continuous testing ground to learn and adapt to user needs and technology of fully autonomous vehicles.

Personal reflection

Due to the complexity of the service, we weren’t able to implement a lean process. I see this project as the very first step to bring a service as such to the market. If I had the chance, I would love to test, learn and iterate the assumptions we made in this project.
