where I graduated in MFA Interaction Design Program in 2016.

a public service for
civic enlightenment

What if audience can participate in art curation in museums?

challenge from digitization

The digital age is all about participation, but rarely does it happen in public institutions such as art museums. The intent of the project is to explore if new services and technology would democratize the structure of a public institution: if the voice from the audience would obtain attention in the institution from bottom-up and if this participation could be useful and relevant for the institution in return.

a stage for amateurs

The final result <Open Studio> is a service that enables visitors in art museums to participate in amateur exhibitions with their handicrafts made in the museum workshop. Using 3D scanning technology, physical handicrafts are transformed to a interactive exhibition in the museum. The service suggests a desirable future direction for art museums to engage their audience, increases their enjoyment and encourages their creative expression.

a holistic approach

The project addresses my personal interest in complex system design that plays with both digital and physical design materials. The collaboration with Bildmuseet offers invaluable learnings throughout the entire project and concrete groundings for the proposed solution. I enjoy the freedom to be a designer without discipline and provoking concepts that are not traditionally considered as design challenge.

re-define automation for
freelance truckers

How could truckers manage freight tasks in cabin?

emerging autonomous ScENARIO

We foresee the merge of self-employed truck drivers in 2030. The speculation roots from primary research with truckers who consider freedom as a crucial aspect of the occupation. With the support of automation technologies, infrastructure evolution and data analytics, truck drivers will be able to deal with freight transport tasks even on the road.

level of automation

We imagine there will be LV3 autonomous system available in truck in 2030. The scenario in the video prototype is tailored to showcase two modes in autonomous driving: driving mode(manual), logistic mode(autonomous) and the transition in between. In driving mode, the trucker pays attention to driving while being able to receive updates of freight task states and automation availability. In logistic mode, she can fully pay attention to managing the delivery schedule.

a multi-modality HMI

The final design proposes a heads-up display (HUD) for task scheduling, with the support of auditory feedback to raise awareness and reinforce the visuals, and a tactile dashboard for secondary task scheduling information and other meta data of the task. A physical knob is introduced to interact with the HUD.

battling with privacy
in connected home 2030

What if we can manipulate data for our own sake?

dilemma of privacy

When personal data collection already challenges privacy, connected home reinforces the concern by invading in our most private and trustworthy physical space. The project speculates a future where privacy concern is turned into a new design opportunity: a universal slider that gives users the power to control the quantity and quality of data transmitted from connected objects to the connected home platform.

making sense of data

The project explores three types of data: numeric data from a weight scale, image data from a monitoring video stream and profile data from the user. Three scenarios are illustrated accordingly to show how data could be translated in a bigger social context: for online dating profile, for family communication and for a general personal identity. The sense-making of data can be altered from user's own interest depending on how much she wants to reveal about herself.

interaction beyond screens

The constraint of a faceless interaction project pushes the final design to engage other sensory experiences such as physical affordance, light feedback and VUI. It is especially relevant when everyday objects will have a certain level of processing power but look just as normal and dumb. The constraint also encourages an alternative aesthetic, storytelling and expression to engage the audience and showcase the concept in the final movie.
